Exceptionally elegant pair of tall Royal Doulton Stoneware vases by Eliza Simmance c1910. The vases are of footed, shouldered-baluster form with tapering neck and scalloped rim. Striking design which accentuates and compliments their form. Horizontal and vertical bands of blue bordered by incised strips representing a lattice of rose stems over which are tubelined sprays of flowers – each individually arranged. Each vase with impressed Royal Doulton mark to based. Signed with Eliza Simmance's monogram (E within an S) together with assistant's monograms; JH (for Jane Hurst), h (likely for Miss B Harman) and j (unknown). The vases measure 39 cm in height and 14.5 cm maximum diameter.
Eliza Simmance, one of the earliest artists engaged, worked at Doulton Lambeth as an artist and designer between 1873 and 1928. She quickly became recognised as an original and versatile designer - winning many high awards at international exhibitions. Her work remains highly collectible. Jane Hurst worked at Doulton from 1879 to 1922, starting as a senior assistant she progressed to completing her own designs.
