Attractive Art Deco Royal Doulton stoneware vase by Bessie Newbury c1920. Shouldered vase with tapering body and short collar neck. Stylised floral and foliate design executed using scraffito and painted techniques. Striking design combined with its form to give a particularly attractive piece. Impressed Royal Doulton mark (used 1902-1922) and pattern number 7946. Monogram BN (for Bessie Newbery). The vase measures 20 cm in height.

 

Bessie Newbery was listed in 1882 as a Junior Assistant but her talent was recognised and she was promoted to Senior Assistant. By 1911 she was working as a Supervisor and Artist, designing original work c1914 to 1924. For more information on Doulton visit our Maker's History pages.
